Blue Mbombo

With a growing fan base that started from her days as a reality TV star, the rising media personality, Blue Mbombo chats to us about her hopes and dreams.
By Fundiswa Nkwanyana

SEE PICS: Blue Mbombo and her sister vacation in Italy

I’m a young and ambitious young lady that works hard. Many people know me as a reality TV star and a model, but I’m also part of some exciting campaigns. I recently joined forces with Dark and Lovely as one of the faces for the latest hair colour range campaign #OwnYourCrown. I’m also the face of Cleré Radiance. It’s exciting times!

I have many hopes and dreams. Travelling around the world is on my bucket list. I believe that travelling relaxes your mind and opens it up to a fresh perspective. I hope my future entails working and travelling. I also want to study towards an MBA in order to be equipped to launch a successful denim range, one day.

Congrats to Blue Mbombo and her sister on scoring matching cars

The entertainment industry taught me not to be naive. As I follow my dreams and grow my brand, I have learnt to trust my instincts. The entertainment industry is ruthless, so I have not to blindly trust.

Hair to impress

Flaunting beautiful hair is a satisfying treat for many women. But, beautiful hair and the constant changing of styles are accompanied by a bad side – breakage and loss. The main culprits are usually incorrect relaxer processes, damage from dyeing and protective hairstyles.

SEE ALSO: Hair Lingo

In order to protect your hair from breakage, you have to relax it once every six or eight weeks and be sure o choose the right chemical. Furthermore, avoid removing protective styles, relaxing or dyeing on the same day, says Betito Ebengo, hair expert at ORS. Even the most broken hair can be revived.

Here are 4 tricks to try:

1. Don’t wash your hair too often. Shampoo traps oil, which dries out your hair, making it prone to breakage. But if you exercise daily, wash it every second day because sweat contains lactic acid that may cause loss.

2. Blow-drying is part of many people’s routine. But, too much exposure to heat does more damage than good. If you have straight hair or a weave that requires this, use a heat protectant after blowing it. Quickly switch to cold air to cool it down.

3. Treat your scalp at least twice a month. This keeps your hair follicles clean and prevents blockage that may cause thinning.

4. Always use a conditioner. It prevents frizz and makes your hair smooth and shiny.

5 ways to enjoy your pay on Black Friday

African women shopping

By Bridgette Matjuda Image: Thinkstock Photos

Held on 24 November 2017, Black Friday may be excellent news for retailers as they aim to increase their sales. But, what do you really gain from it? If you are looking to stay safe during this shopping craze that timeously comes just before the start of the festive season, then this article is definitely for you. If you’re planning to spend your hard-earned money on Black Friday instead of saving it for long-term investments or rainy days, then you could also learn a thing or two. We give you five tips to keep in mind:

  1. Ignore the marketing propaganda

Don’t get sucked into the hype. Do you really need to spend your savings and pay cheque on things that you may not need? Keep calm and think things through, carefully instead of just going with the current.

Battling with debt? Here’s how you can manage it better.

  1. Budget in advance

Set aside a particular amount for all the necessities you want to buy on the day. Once you’ve reached your limit, stop shopping! Don’t be tempted to overspend. This will help you to avoid getting in debt over products and things you didn’t have to buy in the first place.

  1. Plastic is not fantastic

Whatever you do, don’t use your credit card! If you somehow end up using it, then make sure you pay it all back by the end of the following month.

Also See: How to save for your wedding

  1. Learn from the past

Have you used all the products that you bought at previous Black Friday sales? Have you also done sufficient research to see whether shopping on the day results in a gain or loss? This should help you to make an informed decision.

  1. Think about the future

Ask yourself, “Once I spent my hard-earned cash on Black Friday specials, how will I get through the rest of the month?” If you do not have multiple streams of income, then it is advisable not to partake in Black Friday. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

Songstress Yamikani Janet Banda, popularly known as Lady Zamar, chats to us about her love for music. By Fundiswa Nkwanyana Picture by Marx Written Makhado

I chose Lady Zamar as my stage name because of its profound meaning. In Hebrew, Zamar means praising God in music. I adopted that part because my real name is Yamikani, which means praise. The Lady part is what poets always called each other in the poetry societies that I frequented.

Beauty is from within❤️😍 #loved #beauty 👑KingZamar

A post shared by King Zamar 👑 (@lady_zamar) on

I started singing to entertain myself. I grew up in a family that loves music. So without really thinking about it, I started expressing myself musically and singing all the time. I also wrote songs to unwind. People around me noticed my talent and encouraged me to pursue a career in music. I am now known for my musical melodies in popular house songs such as My Baby and Love are Blind.

I create music that speaks to people’s hearts and souls. Each listener relates to a song based on an emotion or experience that they are going through. This makes it a personal journey. I love connecting with people through music.

Felt like an angel today in my first ever Phillipe Mangoza😍 #designer #chic 👑KingZamar

A post shared by King Zamar 👑 (@lady_zamar) on

I’m grateful for the growth of my career. In March 2017, I released my album titled King Zamar and in November, I released the deluxe version of the original album with four additional songs. I’m also honoured to have worked with talented musicians such as Prince Kaybee and Lulo Café, among others. I’m grateful that I get to perform my music to people who appreciate it.

My plan is to continue singing and doing what makes me happy. Right now, I’m focusing on honing my musical skills and growing my brand. I’m grateful that people love my music, and that I have a great support system.

Gugu Zulu is King

Gugu Zulu

Actress and singer Gugu Zulu tells us about her lead role in the upcoming musical She is King. It hits the cinemas on 1 December. By Bridgette Matjuda Pictures Facebook

Gugu plays the character of Khanyisile, who is a young lady from a rural-village. She seeks to be a star and travels to the city of gold, Johannesburg to make her dreams come true. When she lands the role of Zulu Queen Mkabayi in a musical play, she goes on an adventure of self-discovery which includes embracing her Zulu heritage. See what Gugu Zulu had to say in our recent chat.

Tell us about Khanyisile, the character you play in the movie?
Khanyisile has a strong character, and loves music. She does not let circumstances get in the way of her goals. She is resilient and does not back down. Many people will easily connect with her.

Do you have similarities with her?
I am a big dreamer, and just like Khanyisile, will never take no as a form of defeat. We share the same fighting spirit, and desire to be successful as well as role models to young girls.

WATCH: Mandisa Nduna’s new movie role

What was challenging about playing this role?
Going through emotions on camera was challenging. Reliving painful situations is never easy, so tapping into that place of sadness and distraught was challenging. Playing any character can also be a challenge because you have to bring someone to life, and portray them well.

She Is King movie

How did you find being part of the cast?
I was surrounded by great actors, and that was amazing! I had thought that playing the lead would be hard, but the cast made it easy and fun for me. But beforehand,
I had prepared myself well mentally and physically.

Who would you like to see playing your character?
I would go with a new actress; it would be great to give someone unknown a chance, and let their dreams also come to life.

What was your favourite line in the movie?
Every time the character of Shakes, played by Bongani Madondo, called Khanyi “My chocolate muffin”.

WIN 1 of 40 double tickets to the exclusive Bona and Ster-Kinekor She is King pre-screening

What do you think makes a good scene partner?
Someone who lets you breathe and deliver the line the way you want to, and allows you to feed off them and the other way around. It is always frustrating to remember your lines and deliver them with emotion, so an understanding partner makes this easy.

What lessons did you take from the cast?
I worked with talented actors, and they were down to earth. This taught me that it does not matter how big you get in the industry or life; being grounded gets you further. Remaining humble and working hard does not take anything away from you.

What life lessons can viewers take from the movie?
She is King reminds us that women are strong and leaders, and that is what we must strive for. It will teach young girls to never give up on their dreams, and in the process of achieving them, take care of themselves. It will also teach them to never lose themselves while chasing a dream. It is not your circumstances and background that makes you, but what you do with the opportunities given to you. Hard work is key.

Yardley BB Lipcolour set

Our features writer Fundiswa Nkwanyana had the opportunity to use Yardley BB Lip Colour. She tells us her experience.

I love having colour on my lips, but I find that lipstick can be a bit heavy for everyday wear. After trying many lip balms, I was frustrated because I could not find a suitable colour. Fortunately, the Yardley BB Lip Colour range comes in trendy colours – I settled for Cherry Cola.

Also See: Celebs in nude lipstick

The lip balm is moisturising and contains SPF 10. It is packaged in a transparent egg-shaped container that makes it easy to apply. The winning factor for me is that it gives my lips colour with a touch of sheer. However, I find that I have to keep reapplying it because it comes off easily. In spite of this, I still love it because of its soft and light texture.
