Catrice Smokey Eyes Pencil review

Catrice smokey eye pencil

Our features writer Fundiswa Nkwanyana has been using Catrice Smokey Eyes Pencil, and she tells us how she feels about it.

Initially, I found the smokey eye trend intimidating. This is because I am clumsy and don’t have the control needed to draw it perfectly. However, Catrice Smokey Eyes Pencil has come to my rescue. It has an integrated soft brush that makes it easy to apply and blend well.

Catrice smokey eye pencil

The pencil is thick and takes away the fear of poking your eye while drawing on the eyelids. It also has a semi-matte finish that does not make the eye make-up pop too much. Instead, it adds a subtle and seductive tone to the eyes. I’m really enjoying using this product that and love that it has finally made me a part of this fun eye make-up trend! Its only downside is that it doesn’t come with a built-in sharpener.

Thandiswa Mazwai

By Bridgette Matjuda Pictures Andile Mthembu

The award-winning music legend, who is also our December cover star, chats to us about her sisterhood with the late kwaito singer Lebo Mathosa. She also lets us in on other music stars she would love to work with and all things music. Allow her to usher you into her world…

What does music mean to you?
It is my sanctuary, salvation, playground and life’s fascination.

Who influenced your sound and impressions of music as a child?
Like every kid growing up in the 80s, I loved Brenda Fassie, Whitney Houston, Anita Baker and all American 70s funky bands. Mostly, my impression of music was formed around memories. And, every memory, good and bad, has a sound. Even silence has a hum and is often filled with the voices in our head.

Thandiswa Mazwai

WATCH: BHS with Thandiswa Mazwai

Which musos are you currently obsessed with?
I’ve been listening to a lot of old school jazz, including music by Lee Morgan, Johnny Dyani, Ayinde Barrister and Hugh Masekela. Also, there’s no escaping the Nigerian party sound, so Tekno Miles, Wizkid and Davido are always blasting in my radio.

On a good day, which feel-good music do you listen to?
Dancehall (Vybz Kartel, Mavado and Buju Banton), Afrobeat (Fela Kuti, Seun Kuti, Ebo Taylor and the Lijadu Sisters) as well as hip hop (Killer Priest, Homeboy Sandman and Kendrick Lamar).

On a challenging day, which song speaks to you the most?
These days, Mama by Hugh Masekela licks my wounds. But when I die, Philip Tabane’s Ngwana o ya lela must be on the playlist.

Thandiswa Mazwai

Your music is timeless, relatable and unites people from all backgrounds. What is your end goal with it?
I make music to soothe my pain and crystallise the memory of my mother. It’s also to engage subjects of interest and have a conversation with my generation.

Where do you get your inspiration from?
Life, as well as its challenges and beauty. I’m also inspired by my love for Africa.

You consider the late Lebo Mathosa your dear friend and sister in kwaito. Can you paint a picture on the kind of sisterhood you had?
I was a huge fan of Lebo, and I looked up to her in order to soak in her magic. She loved singing and often sung for us when we visited her. She was incredibly generous and fun. I adored her and was broken by her passing. We were so different, yet so similar – kasi girls with a destiny that nobody could stop. I have her autograph!

Thandiswa Mazwai

You’ve collaborated with legendary musicians, both locally and internationally. Which other music legends would you still like to work with?
I would love to work with ntate Caiphus Semenya, Erykah Badu, Georgia Anne Muldrow and Salif Keita.

You have mentioned before that you’re interested in exploring electronic music, dub, funk and punk. When can your fans expect an offering with different sounds of music?
You can come to my punk collaboration with BLK JKS at the AFROPUNK Fest at Constitution Hill on 31 December. We go by the name KingTha vs BLKJKS, and we are working on an album that will come out early next year.

What legacy do you wish to leave behind and how do you want to be remembered by your fans and loved ones?
I never know how to answer this question. Argentinian poet Antonio Porchia once said “One lives in the hope of becoming a memory.”

Nokia 6

Our features writer Fundiswa Nkwanyana tells us about the recently launched Nokia 6.

First impressions – I was initially taken aback by the phone’s 5.5 inch full HD screen; I found it too big for my hands. But once I realised that it was crystal clear, and that I could clearly see my online shopping items, I quickly adapted to its size and fell in love. I also loved its smooth metal exterior that gave it a clean and striking look.

Also See: Catrice Smokey Eyes Pencil review

Performance – I love taking pictures and spending time on social media, and this phone met and exceeded my expectations. The front-facing camera has eight megapixels with a wide-angle lens that made taking selfies with friends easy because everyone could fit in perfectly. The rear camera has 16 megapixels with a flash that took clear pictures at night. Although uploading pictures on my social media apps was seamless, this process was slow when the apps were open at the same time.

Also Read: Yardley BB Lip Colour Review

Overall impressions – This phone delivers a superior smartphone experience, especially for a device that sells for an estimated R3 699, depending on the retailer. It is a slick and affordable smartphone that has comprehensive security features and outstanding entertainment credentials. I loved it.

Mpho Millicent Kumalo “I survived abuse”

Mpho Millicent Kumalo

Mpho Millicent Kumalo chats to Kwanele Mathebula about finding the strength to leave an abusive marriage.

My husband and I were married for 13 years before signs of abuse came to the fore. I was a housewife, and he was working. In October 2016, things started to change after we bought a car and he joined the gym. He became verbally and emotionally abusive. He would make remarks to compare me to women who worked, even though we both agreed that I would stay at home to raise our children. I also found out that he was having an affair. He told his family and I that he wanted to take the other woman as his second wife. Although I refused, his family agreed and started the lobola negotiations. His second wife moved in with us and took over his laundry and cooking. He also refused any care from me.

SEE ALSO: How Gugu Zinhle Masango overcame domestic violence

I tried to fix my marriage before leaving. I even found a job as a cook. It was difficult to remain strong and try to rebuild my confidence when I was constantly being put down. My husband would belittle me in favour of his second wife by sharing the money we made in the house with her. I tried to convince myself that I could give him what he wanted by living peacefully with his second wife, but I couldn’t. The stress took a toll on my health and ability to mother my children. I also felt broken and betrayed by the man who promised to take care of me.

I finally decided to leave him in February 2017. At first, I was confused and struggled to talk about what was happening with anyone. But, one day while out for a walk, I bumped into my cousin whom I was able to bare my soul to. My cousin then arranged for my family to remove my children and I from that situation. I lived with my family in Dobsonville, Soweto, for three months and they helped me through a difficult phase. They allowed me to break down and encouraged me to get back up again. I also began attending daily counselling sessions at counselling at POWA and they became a place of solace for me.

SEE ALSO: Chwayita Ngamlana’s book about an abusive relationship

I am now in a better place. Counselling has helped me by providing me with someone I can trust, and be open and honest with. That has given me a fresh perspective on life, and hope for a better future. My current goal is to take care of myself and my children. I believe that God has made me a masterpiece out of my brokenness.

My advice to women in similar situations is to leave. You are precious to yourself and your children. Choosing to do what is right for you and your health is important. The decisions you make today will impact on you and your children’s future.

Elelwane Pahlane

Elelwane Pahlana, general manager for transformation at Edcon, chats to us about the importance of the Orange Run. By Fundiswa Nkwanyana

The Orange Run aims to raise awareness about gender-based violence. In any form, violence is a violation of human rights, and Edgars UNiTE invites you to join in and take a stand against it. Through the initiative, we want to raise our voices and say NO to violence against women and children during the 16 days of activism.

Also See: Church leader speaks against abuse

The 6km run will end with entertainment. After the fun run, you will get a goodie bag, and an opportunity to relax while enjoying the entertainment we have planned. You can also have a picnic in the park, and listen to good music.

Run for a cause

We also urge you to wear orange every month on the 25th. This is because our voices need to be heard, even after the end of the 16 days of activism. So, wearing orange will keep the message on non-violence against women and children alive throughout the year.

There are two common mistakes that entrepreneurs make. Firstly, they expect success right away. Little do they know that it takes a long time to grow a business, and even longer to make money from a business. But, people starting businesses need to be realistic about their expectations and be patient. Secondly, most people do not invest in human resources, marketing or learning. Investing in human resources could help the business grow, while marketing may propel it. Lastly, you must be willing to learn in order to grow.
