Bizizi

Musician Buhle Zizi, popularly known as Bizizi, chats to us about being the new girl in the gqom block. By Fundiswa Nkwanyana

As a child, I enjoyed dancing to kwaito music. My friends and family would play kwaito songs just to watch me dance. I loved hearing them cheer me on. When gqom became popular, I was fascinated because it’s dance music at its best. Over the years, my love for dancing has evolved. After completing my studies this year, I decided to focus on pursuing music.

Also See: Catching up with Lady Zamar

My career kicked off when I met DJ Cleo. He was looking for a female musician and when I showcased my vocals, he was impressed. I was happy when he chose to work with me, so I grabbed the opportunity with both hands. He features me in several of his gqom songs. I also appreciate that he guides me as a new artist in the industry. My favourite song is Thuso Phala, and I’m glad that people are responding well to it.

Bizizi

I love recording music that I can dance to, and that makes people dance. During the festive season we all need to have fun, dance and be happy. So, my music will do the trick.

I’m looking forward to growing as an artist. I’m eager to learn and create more music. I want to continue making people dance, even years from now. I also hope for an amazing career.

Afropunk

We chat to songstress Nonku Phiri about music and her excitement on the upcoming Afropunk Joburg 2017 Festival. By Fundiswa Nkwanyana

1. I believe that music chose me. I spent my early 20s balancing my studies, work and music. After completing my studies, I decided to explore my musical side because I had something to fall back on. My love for music has remained consistent throughout my life, so I knew that I had to fully embrace it.

2. Being a musician is often a thankless job. Having a clear sense of purpose and self-identity helps me survive the industry because it is not easy. But, I’m grateful for the opportunity to travel, share my views and connect with an audience that resonates with what I have to say. This makes it worthwhile.

3. I am grateful for the doors that 2017 opened for me, and am looking forward to 2018. This year, I was part of an interesting and fun Asian tour, and experimented with visual artistry at the Fak’ugesi Digital Africa Exhibition. I collaborated with visual artists the Honey Collective at the exhibition. I’m looking forward to sharing new music and performing at more events. The New Year will be amazing as I have a lot of surprises in store.

 4. I love that many local artists are included in the Afropunk Joburg 2017 Festival. It is also exciting to have an event of this magnitude finally take place on our shores. I hope to see more of this as local artists have a lot to offer. I’m looking forward to finally seeing my favourite acts at the festival, and can’t wait to perform!

The festival will take place on 30 and 31 December at Constitutional Hill, Johannesburg

Fragrance tips
• Don’t store your fragrances in the bathroom or next to the window. The heat and light can lessen the quality, so keep them on the dressing table instead.
• Make your scent last longer by applying petroleum jelly on your skin first.
• Avoid staining your clothes by spraying perfume right after your shower or bath. The moisture on your skin will help to lock it in.
• Create your own scent by layering fragrances. Start with a stronger scent and top it with a lighter one.

Shopping spree at Builders

Our Features Writer Fundiswa Nkwanayana tells us how she finally got her DIY projects started by shopping at Builders.

After finding some amazing ideas on Pinterest, translating them into action was intimidating. This was mainly because I find hardware stores daunting. That is until I discovered Builders. I was so chuffed that they had everything I needed to get my ventures going.

Builders Logo

Also See: 4 tips to keep your home safe while away

Online shopping escapades
I find researching for DIY projects online and also searching for products to use at the same time easier as I can compare everything simultaneously. Once I landed on www.builders.co.za, it was easy to manoeuvre through the various categories. I found what I needed easily by filtering the search to show cheapest items first. However, it gets complex when the item you want is not available at the store you have selected. You then have to select another store. Once you get the hang of switching stores, the online shopping experience moves swiftly along. I absolutely loved the price drop and daily deals tab because I could easily see if the items on my wish list had been reduced.

Builders Warehouse

In-store shopping escapades
There are various stores under the Builders umbrella: Builders Superstore, Builders Warehouse, Builders Trade Depot and Builders Express. I prefer the Express stores because they are convenient for basic DIY items. They also have sales assistants that welcome customers on arrival and guide them through the store. Each department has a designated sales assistant who provides in-depth information and advice on different products. My favourite part in-store as walking through the nursery – I felt like I was in a beautiful garden.

You guys, thank you so much for all the birthday wishes yesterday! I have to thank my late daughter, Zenani … Had it not been for her tragic passing and at the hands of a drunk driver, I would have never gotten clean and sober. I’m also thankful for my son, Zwelami for believing in me and keeping me on a path of recovery, seven years later! To my late son, Zenawe and my daughter, Zanyiwe … Being your mother is one of the best things about me. ❤ I have no idea why you have chosen me as your mother but it’s my highest honoured being a mother to you and your older sister and brother. To all my babies – Zenani, Zwelami, Zenawe, Zanyiwe, my twins (I’m hoping to conceive miraculously) and my 7 unborn children at the fertility clinic 😂 … Although I want to say that I’m sorry in advance for what you are yet to read in When Hope Whispers and the sequel, I’m not really sorry … What I am though, is unashamedly (already) proud of the children you are and the children I want to raise you all to be – I want you to embrace and live your truth, in acceptance of your real selves albeit fear, self doubt and judgement from others. You have so much to offer the world! ❤ God, I’m ready for my twins now. Claire Mawisa

Local stars are excited about the new year and what it holds for each and everyone of them. Take a look at how these fabulous stars looked back on the year 2017 and the lessons that they learnt:

Ayanda Thabethe

Basetsana Kumalo

As the year draws to a close I am filled with the deepest gratitude and profound emotions for the year that’s been. As I reflect, I am taken back to 17 March 2016 when I slipped in the rain and fell at my son’s school at midday, head concussed, suffered a complex fracture and dislocation of my right ankle. The injury involved a spiral fracture of the fibula and lateral malleolus, an oblique fracture of the medial malleolus and a transverse fracture of the posterior aspect of the tibia. Surgery included open reduction and internal fixation with titanium plates and 11 screws. I was bedridden for 3 months, in a cast, on crutches, moved around in a wheelchair. In my prayer time, I said to my God, that WHEN He heals me and raises me, I didn’t say IF…I knew I was going to be healed, that I am going to raise my hand, show up, live fully and do what He has called me to do. Fast forward to 2017…I raised my hand, I showed up, I didn’t postpone anything I aimed to do this year. I cooked(my passion), I danced, I laughed, I loved and I stood in the light of my own truth. I celebrated each day I was blessed with. I was fully present in each moment I was presented with at work, at home, with my friends. Everyday I counted my blessings and fully appreciated the sanctity of life. I am thankful for the highs and the lows, the good and not so good. I have learned much and remain open to new learnings. Don’t wait for a life-changing event before you step into your greatness and destiny. Love, Live, Laugh!!! #YearOfYes #ThankYou Wishing you a year with: ■New Dreams ■ New Hopes ■ New Perspectives ■New Goals ■New Aspirations Happy 2018 beautiful people.💝💝💝 📸 @sbu_kandee

I have been through a lot (and I don’t mean just in 2017), but I am able to keep my smile. Just because we don’t announce the battles that we fight everyday doesn’t mean they don’t exist. Hee ho thata lefatseng batho ba Modimo. I always say if our parents knew the kind of nonsense that we go through EVERYDAY; whether in the work space, in relationships or even in “friendships”, they would probably die of heart attacks! Growing up is proving to be much harder than I thought it would be…but still, i soldier on! Be careful who you trust, who you allow into your life…but don’t let bad experiences determine your whole future. The Bible says the will of God will not take you where the grace of God cannot protect you… I am glad that even after all the turmoil, I am still #happy, I am still #smiling, I am still #standing and I am YET to stand!!! Kelly Khumalo

By Amanda Mtuli Photography by Jurie Potgieter

The award-winning songstress, who is also our January cover star, chats to us about her favourite music and the inspiration behind her eighth studio album.

What type of music do you listen to?
I’m into rock music. I listen to rock musicians such as Coldplay, 30 Seconds to Mars and Lenny Kravis, to mention a few. I’m a rock star and if given a chance I’d follow in the footsteps of Tina Turner, Pink and Demi Lovato because these are the artists that I like.

Kelly Khumalo

What genre of music would you like to sing?
I mostly sing soft songs and I’m very aggressive sometimes which is why I want to sing rock. It makes sense to me because of my aggressive nature. The genre is also very passion driven and I can be aggressive in the way I deliver my vocals.

Also See: Kelly Khumalo’s beach birthday weekend celebration

How do you prepare for live shows?
Sometimes I’ll prepare to sing smoothly, dazzle and be sexy but then I walk on stage, feel the audience and things change completely. I don’t control it, it just sort of happens organically.

Kelly Khumalo

What’s the inspiration behind your new music?
I’m currently working on my eighth album titled Unleashed. Finally I’m not going to be apologetic about the gift that God has given me; hence the album is called unleashed. I’m at a place in my life where I know who I am and I’m going to celebrate the best of me. So, I’m unleashing myself to the world and it will echo in this album.

Do you have an alter ego on stage?
Yes I do, I used to have a name for her when I was starting out in the music industry but not anymore.
