Meagan Good opens up about her lighter skin complexion

Actress Meagan Good has opened up about her lighter skin complexion. In a recent interview with Ashley Dunn, of “Where Is The Buzz Tv,” the star shared that the skin bleaching rumours broke her heart.

Image: Meagan Good IG

Meagan shared in part; “It broke my heart to think that there’s little girls seeing this commentary and thinking it’s true. It broke my heart that in a season when you have young Black men and women being murdered everywhere that someone would think for one second that I don’t love my Black skin. That bothered me.”

Meagan explained that the rumours started after she started using products to remove a dog bite scar from her leg. After being happy with the results she went on to use the practitioner’s anti-ageing products which she says she liked. She shared in part; “And I used her anti-aging products and they were phenomenal. So I was like, ‘Oh, she’s the truth.’ And after I used her anti-aging product, I did find out that she was unlicensed. But I didn’t think it was a big deal because I’d already used her products and I felt good about it.”

She continued; “Then, when she said let me fix the sun damage. I was like, ‘Well, now I trust her. It’s fine.’ And I start using it—and someone asked me today—‘If it was just your forehead, then why your whole face?’ Because she said it everything needed to be even so just use it, wash with it. Your whole face. And as I saw myself getting lighter,  I started freaking out and I said, ‘What’s going on?’ And she said, ‘Oh no, no. It’s just going to lift the damage first and then everything will come back.’ And I said, ‘Oh ok, cool.’ And I saw myself getting lighter. And I was like, ‘What is happening?!’ And she was like, ‘Oh, don’t worry your color will come back.’ And I said, ‘But  And I said, ‘But when is it going to come back?’ She said, ‘It’ll come back soon I promise.’”

She further explained that while going through this privately, she faced public scrutiny and couldn’t defend herself. She said in part; “Yeah it got under my skin a little bit. But what I realized is while I was in it, I couldn’t defend myself because I looked crazy and I had to just sit with it and just be okay with some people are going to think what they’re going to think. And what I realize was like my prayer was after I had gotten married and dealt with a lot of the church folk thing, my prayer for the last couple years was, ‘Lord, deliver me from caring about what other people think about me.’ And I know in the Bible it says if you need to correct something, you should but if you don’t need to, let it be.”

Musician and mom of two Christina Milian talked about raising a newborn baby amid the coronavirus pandemic in an interview with E! Online. Image: Christina Milian IG

Christina shared in part; “It’s been an absolute blessing. I couldn’t have asked for a better time for this to be happening to be honest with you. I think it was going to be more challenging if I went straight back to work because there would have been a sense of guilt that would really overcome me of not being able to have that time with my baby so this couldn’t have come at a better time.”

She added; “One of the best and most rewarding things to ever happen is being a mom and I don’t want to take that for granted.”

Christina shared that this time has also allowed her and Matt to be hands-on when it comes to raising their son. She said in part; “I’m grateful for the family bonding time. That is probably the biggest blessing that has ever happened. I’m grateful for Matt. As a new dad, he would have been working and on tour. This means so much for us. It’s our first child together and I’m raising my child for the first time with his dad from the beginning and it’s really special to me. This is what life is all about and I don’t mind the break.”

She also shared advice for parents who are also raising their children during this time saying in part; “I want to tell the moms to be strong,” she shared. “I know we don’t get a lot of times to ourselves but I want to send a lot of loves to my mom. I think the best advice from my mom was make sure to try and get time to yourself.”

How to deal with a clingy person

how to deal with a clingy partner

If you often use the words annoying or irritating when referring to someone, chances are that person is clingy and needy. Can that relationship be saved?

By: Lindiwe Mciteka Pictures: XX

“I bumped into an old acquintance from high school while shopping one day. We exchanged numbers and had our first social hangout that weekend. Since then, she’s been blowing up my phone and social media by liking and commenting on every picture that I post. She’s constantly suggesting we hang out or passes by my house or office. It’s all a bit much because we were never close friends to begin with,” says Linda*. People with an excessive desire to be accepted or a fear of rejection can be classified as clingy or emotionally needy says Dr Lungile Lechesa, a clinical psychologist from Johannesburg. “Clingy people have insecurities of being rejected or abandoned, and struggle to be alone. They seek validation, which can be masked as attention-seeking, and have a hard time making friends because they tend to cling to one or two people,” she adds. Zanele* feels that her ex had a similar fear of rejection during their three-year relationship. “We met at the gym, and he wouldn’t take no for an answer until I agreed to go out with him,” she recalls. “At first I was flattered by his desire to spend all his time with me, but he soon became controlling and wanted to know my every move. He got really upset when I didn’t answer my phone right away, and would wait outside my office. The last straw was when he accused me of cheating. So, I broke up with him, but then he cried and apologised. It was draining and exhausting, and has changed my approach to relationships. I’m now very wary and intolerant of anything that reminds me of the way my ex behaved.”

Escaping an emotionally abusive relationship

AN OBSESSION

In Zanele’s case, the signs that the clinginess had become excessive were all there. “Anything that impairs your ability to function is unhealthy. A clingy person does not care of other people’s emotions because they are more invested in having their emotional needs met. They are also prone to anxiety, and struggle to regulate their own emotions,” says Lungile. She also adds that there are a few underlying causes of emotional neediness. “Clinginess may stem from a difficult childhood experience or lack of a healthy attachment to a parent or caregiver in infancy, where their emotional needs were not met. They may also have had an experience that taught them that when people leave, they don’t come back. And, will often develop a strong need to hold on to significant people in their lives.” Roxy Saanglai, a life coach from East London, adds that insecurity is also a factor. “Clingy people have an emotional deficit and a need for constant reassurance, attention and affirmation from others instead of finding that within themselves,” she says.

Learning how to say no

AVOID OR ADDRESS IT

It’s tempting to avoid the clingy person instead of addressing the issue directly. But, going about it this way stunts the growth of your relationship. If you really care about this person, it’s best to address the problem head on. “Set healthy boundaries within the relationship that teaches the person that independence is important to you. Hopefully they will learn their own independence in the process,” says Lungile. You can also take it a step further by suggesting therapy. “There often is no easy way to recommend therapy, but it can be done from a place of love and care. Chances are the clingy person also has signs of depression, anxiety or deep-seated insecurities. So, highlighting those issues may encourage them to seek help,” she adds.

WHEN YOU ARE CLINGY

So, you’re reading this article and it dawns on you that you are the clingy one in your relationships – be it with a friend, significant other, your child or colleague. Lungile says you can often tell if people tend to avoid you or cancel plans frequently. “The reality is that the more demanding a person is, the more likely they are to push away the people close to them. You may also find yourself having a lot of unnecessary arguments or disagreements with people, particularly your romantic partner; when they speak to someone of the opposite sex, don’t answer your call or text immediately or they accuse you of being too needy.” If you find yourself unable to function and carry out daily activities without obsessing and overly preoccupied by about the other person, are constantly checking their social media profiles and are unable to do activities independently, you may have a serious problem. “Becoming distressed at the thought of being away from the other person, borderline stalking them and self-medicating with substances in order to cope with the absence of the other are all signs of extreme emotional neediness that need urgent attention,” says Lungile. Building your self-esteem is an important factor to recovery. “As a life coach, I teach positive self-love and building your confidence back up, and I encourage you to pursue your own passions,” Roxy shares. She adds that keeping yourself busy will give your partner and friends space; you will begin to respect their boundaries, create them for yourself and practice healthy social behavior. Lungile recommends speaking to a therapist or a counsellor to address the problems at their root. “With awareness and insight, it will be a lot easier to learn skills that help you to be more independent which will lead to healthier relationships.” Also look to meditation which helps to keep you calm and regulate your feelings. “Using positive mantras such as ‘I am enough. I am worthy. It is okay to be me and to love myself’ while meditating helps to reinforce those feelings and builds you up,” says Roxy.

Tammy Taylor Nails

The nail salon industry is booming all around the globe. One of the easier industries to enter into, opening your own nail salon can be one of the best decisions you ever make. In the US alone, the salon and spa industry are worth over $57-billion, and even though the industry is facing a few challenges at the moment due to the worldwide pandemic we are facing, it remains a good investment going forward.

View Tammy Taylor Franchise Opportunities

Regardless of the economic situation, history has shown that clients view their salons and spas as sanctuaries, and are willing to make other sacrifices to continue making use of these services. They can be a refuge in a crazy world, and provide a much-needed respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Another reason women continue to support their favourite beauty and nail salons, even in tough times, is that almost all of them are operated and staffed by women, which encourages women empowerment. This is especially true in Africa, where most other businesses are traditionally owned by men, and where women business owners don’t always have the same support their male counterparts enjoy.

Many well-respected publications have documented the recent rise of female entrepreneurs, notably Forbes, Harvard Business Review, the European Economic Review and Thrive Global.

Forbes notes that women are often more willing than men to challenge their current reality, re-evaluate their mindset, and make a commitment to finding their passion. In the US, women entrepreneurs have grown by over 30% since 2007, and that figure is rising. Not only are these women growing their own wealth, but are creating jobs for other women.

Harvard Business Review says that women-owned businesses account for 37% of enterprises across the globe. In a survey conducted on only 67 of the 188 countries recognised by the World Bank, the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor found that 126 million were starting or running businesses, and 98 million were running established businesses for more than three and a half years – almost a quarter of a billion women making a positive impact on the global economy.

In a paper published in the European Economic Review, researchers found that there is a relationship between personal wealth and the propensity to start a new business in the female demographic. Thrive Global found that female entrepreneurs tend to contribute a higher percentage of their earnings to organizations and funds that develop communities and benefit others, especially humanitarian and environmental efforts.

Deciding on what kind of business to start can be daunting, however. Even once a decision has been made as to the industry or business type, it can still be a monumental challenge to try and go it alone.

View Tammy Taylor Franchise Opportunities

Deciding to purchase a franchise is a choice that makes a lot of sense – the franchising industry worldwide is huge, and very successful. In South Africa, one of the most successful franchises in the nail and beauty industry is Tammy Taylor Nails. Founded in the USA by Tammy Taylor herself, and brought to South Africa by the founder of Tammy Taylor Nails SA, Melany Viljoen, this franchise group is well-respected in the beauty industry.

Not only does it offer prospective franchisees the distinction of owning a luxury salon, but being part of this franchise group means that each salon owner has access to a wealth of experience, support, training and expertise to help ensure that her business is successful.

Supporting female entrepreneurs is paramount at Tammy Taylor Nails, and the nail and beauty industry is one that is well-suited to women who want to be in business for themselves, follow their passion, and be able to draw on the support of an experienced team when needed.

DIY Skincare Treatments for Oily Skin

$

Are you looking for natural home remedies to combat oily skin? Look no further because we have you covered with DIY skincare treatments.

Egg whites and lemon

When used together, these ingredients can do wonders for your skin. Egg whites have skin-tightening effects and absorb excess oil from the skin. They also contain minerals and vitamins that can improve your skin’s overall appearance. Lemon, on the other hand, has antibacterial properties to remove bacteria to keep your skin clear.

Here’s how you can make an egg white and lemon face mask:

  • Mix one egg white with a teaspoon of fresh lemon juice.
  • Apply the mixture to your face and leave it on for 10 minutes or until the mask dries.
  • Rinse off with warm water.

Honey

It appears that our taste buds are not the only thing that honey does wonders to. When applied to your face, honey’s antibacterial and antiseptic abilities can reduce oiliness while keeping your skin smooth. This is because honey is a natural humectant, a substance that reduces the loss of moisture. Apply a thin layer of honey(preferably raw) onto your face and leave it on for 10 minutes before rinsing it off with warm water.

Oatmeal

The grain in oatmeal can gently exfoliate, soothe skin and absorb excess oil. To use on your face:

  • Mix half a cup of ground oats with hot water then add one tablespoon of honey.
  • Massage on to your face gently for 3-5 minutes.
  • Rinse off with warm water.

Once you’ve washed off the oatmeal and your skin is dry, apply a mattifying cream to seal in all that goodness!

Tomatoes

What makes tomatoes an effective natural solution in fighting oily skin is that they contain salicylic acid – a common acne treatment. To make a tomato mask:

  • Squash a fresh tomato and mix with one teaspoon of sugar.
  • Apply to the skin and leave on for 10 minutes.
  • Rinse off with warm water.

Fun fact: salicylic acid is also found in Ponds Pimple Clear Leave On Gel – a moisturiser that reduces pimples and protects it from future break-outs.

Tips to Prolong Your Hair Colour

Lockdown has forced many of us to adapt and get creative. One of the many ways that people have chosen to do this is by experimenting with hair colouring kits.  Pick n Pay reported a 92% increase in hair colouring kit sales during the lockdown, so it’s quite evident that hair colouring is a trend that many people across the country are following.

While we support the trend wholeheartedly, we want to make sure that people know how to ensure their hair colours last, and that’s why we’ve put together these tips to help people prolong it.

Here’s what you need to do:

Avoid washing your hair with hot water

We know how amazing a hot shower can feel on your skin, but hot water isn’t that great on hair that’s been dyed. If you wash your hair with hot water, your hair’s cuticles are opened and that allows your colour to wash out while you’re shampooing and conditioning your hair. To avoid that, opt for a lukewarm wash using shampoo for colour treated hair and rinse your hair with cold water after using a deep conditioner.

Wash your hair less often

Several factors that can fade your hair colour such as UV radiation, toxins and heat, so don’t let frequent washing be added to the equation of things that can decrease how long your hair colour will last. Not only will frequent washes fade away your hair colour but it can also strip away your hair’s natural oils.

We recommend that you use the TRESemmé Colour Revitalise Shampoo that is designed to cleanse and prolong your hair colour without stripping it of its natural oils.

Avoid heat styling tools as much as possible

Heat is one thing that anyone with dyed hair should avoid. Hair that’s been dyed is prone to damage and fading as it is, so adding heat to the equation makes it even more vulnerable. So, if you absolutely must use heat styling tools, be sure to use a heat protection spray to protect your hair from breakage and fading too soon.

Use Dry Shampoo

On days that you feel like skipping your wash day, you can always use a dry shampoo instead to refresh your hair while also revamping your colour without having to head to the salon.

Enjoy colour treated colour hair that lasts with these tips!

Showmax announces Mohale tell-all

Showmax has just wrapped the Showmax Original Mohale: On the Record, a tell-all interview between Mohale Motaung and Aldrin Sampear, host of Unfiltered on SABC 3 and the drive time show Beyond The Headline on SAFM. The special will premiere on 4 August 2022, first on Showmax.

Mohale and his husband Somizi Mhlongo became the poster couple for gay marriage in South Africa when their SAFTA-nominated 2020 wedding special, Somizi & Mohale: The Union, was labelled The Union of the Year and set a then record for the most first day views on Showmax. Their relationship was also a central focus on Living The Dream With Somizi S4, which won the 2020 SAFTA for Best Structured or Docu-Reality Show.

As Aldrin says, “As a queer person, their union has been a celebration of what many would love to achieve but, because of societal norms, have struggled to. Some of us even lived our fantasies through their love story and became invested in it.”

But Somhale wasn’t the fairytale union it seemed. This became clear when the audio of an off-the-record interview with Mohale was leaked in August 2021, including allegations of how Somizi physically abused him.

Much has been said about the impact of these allegations on Somizi, who took time off from Idols and Metro FM as a result, but is now back on the cover of True Love this month and sharing his side of the story in Living the Dream With Somizi S5 on Showmax.

But much less has been said about how the alleged abuse, the leak, and the pending divorce has impacted Mohale.

“This sit-down is an opportunity to hear Mohale’s version of their union, and now, its cracks,” says Aldrin.

“A lot has been said about me, both true and untrue,” says Mohale. “I initially had no intentions to publicly speak of the events that have occurred, due to an agreement I had with the other parties involved. But when the agreement was dishonoured by the other party, it became paramount that I tell my truth as I know it. With all the misinformation in the public domain, it is my responsibility to correct any propaganda as I represent not only myself, but those that may have experienced a story similar to mine. I would also like people to truly get to know me for who I am, as opposed to who they have assumed me to be.”

“Having told the story of the wedding, we wanted to explore everything that followed,” says Candice Fanguiero, head of content at Showmax. “Living The Dream With Somizi S5 is currently the most popular title on Showmax but it’s just one perspective, so we’re now adding Mohale’s voice so he can speak for himself in this special.”

5 Tips to help combat the symptoms of colds and flu

With cold weather comes unwanted sniffles, coughs and headaches, all associated with colds and flu. This is the season that is most dreaded by parents when it comes to looking after their family and keeping them safe from getting sick.

“Giving your family the best care, from the youngest member to the oldest, is a priority for every parent,” comments Mario Correia, brand manager for trusted decongestant brand Karvol. “Providing the whole family with what they need to combat their symptoms quickly and effectively means having the right elements on hand working together to create a holistic solution.”

Correia suggests the following tips to provide your family with the care they need and deserve while effectively battling symptoms associated with colds and flu:

  1. A humidifier is a quick and easy way to relieve the pain associated with nasal congestion by creating moisture in the air. Breathing in moist air can soothe the inflamed membranes and blood vessels in your nose while, thinning the mucus in your sinuses. This assists in flushing out the mucus quickly, helping you to breathe easier.
  2. Use a brand such as Karvol to help the entire family overcome congestion symptoms associated with colds and flu. The Karvol adult chest rub and the Karvol decongestant capsules, suitable for children from three months old, aids in relieving nasal congestion and symptoms of cold and flu. The combination of aromatic oils including menthol, camphor, eucalyptus, thymol and lavender oil, when released work actively to help you breathe more easily day and night. The capsules can be added to a humidifier, or even dotted onto a handkerchief placed next to your child as they sleep.
  3. Rest your body while sick. Give your body a chance to get better, which is best achieved through relaxation and rest.
  4. Staying hydrated when you are sick is important as it helps to thin the mucus in your nose, expelling it quicker and relieving pressure. If you are suffering from a sore throat as well, warm tea is a soothing option to help keep you hydrated.
  5. Relieve pain by using age-appropriate pain medication. If you are unsure what pain medication you should give your child, ask your doctor or pharmacist. Relieving the body aches and other pain, will allow your body to rest more easily and give you a chance to get over your cold or flu.

Quick, effective relief from colds and flu is needed to get your family up and about and feeling better. “Winter is a time when colds and flu are more prevalent, and therefore knowing how to treat the symptoms when they occur helps in providing relief and comfort from the start for the entire family,” suggests Correia.
